Teenage Alcohol Abuse, The Interrelationship Between Abusive Drinking And Coping Skills, And The Necessity For Coping Skills Training

Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics show that alcohol abuse among teenagers is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Quite a few alcohol addiction professionals assert that alcohol ads brought into being by the media are a major reason for the rise in teen alcohol abuse.

Other alcohol abuse professionals state that the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and accessibility of beer, liquor, and wine in our society. Still other alcohol addiction authorities assert that many of our young people involve themselves in harmful drinking because of the increased stress that they are subjected to.

From a slightly different point of view, due to the fact that both parents in many families work, the lack of parental guidance obviously has to play a significant part in the escalation of adolescent alcohol abuse. And last but not least, different alcohol abuse authorities believe that the proliferation of teen alcohol abuse is due, in part, to our "anything goes" society.

One feature of adolescent alcohol abuse that appears to be lacking in the alcohol addiction research findings, then again, is the lack of educational programs that teach adolescents how to augment their coping skills so that their abusive and careless drinking behavior is drastically reduced or done away with. More to the point, scientific research has demonstrated that there is an indirect relationship between poor coping skills and careless and abusive drinking.

In effect, this means that the more mediocre the coping skills, the higher the incidence of alcohol abuse. To the degree that this is a valid line of reasoning, why isn't coping skills training a primary part of the educational prospectus in all of our high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools?

Let us create a scenario for illustrative purposes. Let us imagine a society in which all people are taught how to achieve solid coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including the twelfth grade. In such a society, when life gets complicated, people who are "coping skills experts" will be able to respond in a healthier and more productive way, contrary to others who are unsuccessful in their attempts to put their coping skills into practice.

Stated differently, students who exhibit outstanding coping skills will be more able to think clearly and demonstrate first-class decision making as opposed to students who, because they failed to obtain quality coping skills, are attracted to the "quick fix" of hazardous drinking.

What would happen in the above "ideal" society, furthermore, if young people not only got outstanding coping skills training but also received a top shelf education that outlined the long term and short term negative consequences associated with alcohol abuse and drug abuse? Emphasizing these types of teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more highly developed coping skills training, it is asserted, would help teenagers stay away from the obvious charm associated with underage drinking and, for that reason, would notably lessen the hazardous drinking behavior exhibited by adolescents in our country.

There are obviously several valid reasons why so many of our teenagers drink in a harmful manner. Such a knotty subject matter demands an all-inclusive and relevant response by our parents, students, politicians, and educators so that our adolescents can learn how to cope with life's difficulties in a more productive and responsible manner instead of gravitating to abusive and excessive drinking to solve their problems.
