Richard had an exceptionally hard time keeping a job. In fact, due to his inactivity and lack of drive, he was out of a job far more frequently than he was in work. And when he did get a job, he had an exceptionally hard time getting to work on time, he commonly received less than acceptable performance reviews, and he called off sick so habitually that he commonly got fired three or four weeks after he started working.

It almost goes without saying that one of the effects of Richard's less than passing employment track record was the fact that he was virtually without a dime from day-to-day. In spite of Richard's appalling work record and financial mismanagement, on the other hand, in some way he made it a point to drink in a hazardous and abusive manner from day-to-day.

So it came as no big surprise when Richard got arrested for a second DUI. When he went before the court, the judge stated to Richard that his alcohol-related conduct was disgraceful and, consequently, he was going to sentence Richard to serve eight months in jail.

During his time while locked up in jail, Richard was expected to learn more about alcohol facts such as alcohol related consequence and alcohol deaths, about the demoralizing results of irresponsible and hazardous drinking, and he was required to get alcohol rehab. The judge underscored the fact that unless Richard gets professional alcohol rehab and learns how to live an alcohol-free life, he will most likely be spending a considerable amount of time imprisoned.

Richard articulated that he understood what the judge was saying but he still thought that placement in the county jail was not the most realistic ruling. The magistrate saw things differently and stated that it was his responsibility to keep alcoholics off the streets who drive and drink and who receive multiple DUIs. To give credibility to this perspective, the magistrate articulated some respected, comprehensively researched alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency statistics that highlighted some of the harmful effects that are linked to irresponsible and hazardous drinking such as alcohol related deaths.

Even though Richard understood that he drank excessively, he never believed that he was alcohol dependent. So it was quite a shock when Richard began having chronic alcoholism symptoms and signs and alcohol withdrawals nearly three-and-a-half hours after getting locked up in the municipal jail.

To manage his alcohol withdrawal symptoms in a safe manner, Richard was taken to a rehab center for alcohol detoxification and then brought back to the city jail. While locked up in jail Richard was given alcohol treatment but due to the fact that he received this rehab as something that was forced upon him, he was unsuccessful in taking ownership of his irresponsible and abusive drinking.

When his time in the municipal jail was completed, the magistrate told Richard that he would be under stringent observation and would be required to take random blood alcohol tests. After hearing how Richard was unsuccessful in taking ownership of his drinking circumstances and how he unenthusiastically followed the rehab modus operandi while in jail, the judge knew that it was simply a matter of time before he would be seeing Richard once again in court about his careless drinking behavior.

As the judge thought about Richard's circumstance, he couldn't help but think about how some individuals never "get it" and discover how to live in a responsible manner.
