Mr. Johnson was one of the health teachers at a small rural high school in the Southern part of the United States. For "Alcohol Understanding Month" he made up his mind that he would center on the following three topics for a class project: the symptoms of alcoholism, the signs of alcoholism, and alcoholic symptoms.

After Mr. Johnson finalized the topics that would be assigned to his pupils, he made up his mind that he would provide them with their assignment the following Thursday morning. When "assignment day" finally arrived, Mr. Johnson met with the students in his classroom, passed out some relevant research literature, and then notified his pupils about the topics he ultimately selected.

He then gave the students in his classroom a summary of some significant signs of alcoholism and highlighted how important it is to learn how to associate these facts, symptoms, and statistics with the real-life circumstances of alcohol addicted individuals. He then gave his pupils a short description about the importance of learning more about alcoholics and how they function on an everyday basis.

Mr. Johnson told the students in his class that they could give their attention to one of the three topics or talk about all three topics and how they are interrelated. In effect this would be similar to a general overview but done in a more comprehensive way.

Another alternative that he offered to the students in his classroom was the following: select a topic such as alcoholism symptoms and signs, delve into things in more detail, and then go over two or three symptoms and signs. Mr. Johnson then discussed the fact that the same principals apply to the other two topics, namely, the symptoms of alcoholism and alcoholic symptoms.

The end result of their examination would be a five thousand word term paper and then a ten minute oral presentation that would be given in front of the class. As appreciation for their extraordinary academic achievement, those with the top two overall grades on the term paper and on the oral presentation will be asked to present the findings from their inquiry at the community drug and alcohol abuse symposium during the last two weeks of January.

As noted by Mr. Johnson, since there are more than a few alcoholism signs and symptoms to select, he brought up the fact that he was not very fretful about various students selecting the same symptoms and signs for their class assignment. Certainly, even if multiple students were to choose virtually the same symptoms and signs, the examples that are related to each symptom or sign would certainly add enough variety to steer clear of several students presenting the same content.

Mr. Johnson then discussed the fact that while there are more than a few alcoholism signs and symptoms that could be picked, the number of alcoholism facts and statistics that could be listed were almost unlimited. When the topic of alcoholic symptoms was added to the equation, moreover, the students apprehended rather quickly that the three topics would provide a considerable amount of material from which to select.

Why did Mr. Johnson decide upon the signs of alcoholism, alcoholic symptoms, and the symptoms of alcoholism as the topics for this project? Mr. Johnson thought that by augmenting the awareness of his students about the negative effects of alcohol dependency and the miserable existence suffered by alcohol dependent people, his students might think more wisely before they engaged in irresponsible drinking behavior.
