When Lois was in high school, she had obtained a reputation as a studious person who rarely, if ever, partied with her classmates. She seemed passionate about excelling academically so that she would be able to secure a career that she not only benefited from but one that also gave her some monetary stability.
After Lois finished high school, she applied to and was accepted into a leading program in sociology. Her reasoning for this decision was that this subject area would be a good springboard for law school and would not be identical to the preponderance of law school applicants who major in political science at the undergraduate level.
Lois was the kind of individual who worked thoroughly to complete what she started and then would take a break when she could. As it turns out, nonetheless, virtually all of the things she did between terms or during her summer vacations were unrelated to drinking. Needless to say, Lois was anything but a party-person. Now that her final examinations for her second year in law school were done and appreciating the fact that she had done extremely well on her tests, because of this, she wanted to let her hair down and do something enjoyable.
So Lois and several of her friends went to a local bar and grill where they had a few cocktails. As the evening proceeded, Lois and her friends continued to drink. In fact, she was having such a fantastic time that she didn't want the night to come to an end.
After drinking around fifty-five minutes when Lois began to slur her speech, talk in a confused manner, and then become unconscious, nonetheless, her buddies immediately knew that they needed to call that they needed to call 911, the emergency number, and ask for emergency assistance because they thought that Lois was displaying alcohol poisoning symptoms.
Lois was very aware that she came an inch from losing her life from an alcohol overdose and, consequently, was thankful to be alive. At the same time, however, she was somewhat dejected knowing that she had almost passed away the night before. Her Mother and Father knew how relentlessly she worked at the university and how little she let herself have any fun. Nonetheless, they also realized that Lois needed to keep away from irresponsible and hazardous drinking.
As a result, they suggested that down the road, whenever a drinking opportunity presents itself, that she always drink in moderation. Lois was in agreement with this and promised her Mother and Father and her friends that she would never ever drink in an excessive and abusive manner. In her own words, "I never had a clue that I might become one of the alcohol poisoning statistics in the local city newspaper. I now know that careless drinking is not the best for me. I give my word of honor that this will never happen again."
Fortunately, Lois was not only "school smart" but she also had a lot of common sense. In other words, she immediately grasped the fact that she had made an error and decided that she would never make the same mistake again. Indeed, she now understood that she had involved herself in "binge drinking" and that even one instance of this kind of careless drinking can end in a loss of life.
